How to search WooCommerce products by SKU

If you sell parts, electronics, tools or anything with codes, people search by SKU. A search that only reads product names will let them down.

Test what you have first

Pick five products. Copy each SKU from the product page, paste it into your store search, and see whether the product comes back. Do the same with a variation SKU, such as one size of a shirt. Do not assume. Themes and plugins change what search reads, so test your own store.

Why variation SKUs get missed

A variable product has one parent and many variations, and each variation can have its own SKU. Many searches only look at the parent. A shopper who types the code printed on the box for one size gets no result, because that code lives on a variation the search never reads.

Codes with spaces and dashes

People type codes in different shapes. "a7 iv", "a7iv" and "a7-iv" should all find the same camera. Check that spaces and dashes inside a code are treated as optional. See our guide on typos and synonyms.

Search size and colour too

The same problem applies to attributes. A shopper typing "blue 42" is searching variation options. If your search only reads the parent product's title, that search finds nothing even though the product is in stock.

How Lodestar handles it

Lodestar Search matches model numbers with or without spaces and dashes in the free plugin. Lodestar Pro also searches variation SKUs and options such as size and colour, and a shopper who types one finds the parent product. This is built into the index when it is rebuilt, so it adds no work while the shopper types.

Questions

Does WooCommerce search find products by SKU?

It depends on your version, theme and plugins, so test it with a few real SKUs. Variation SKUs are the usual gap.

Why is my variation SKU not found?

Search often reads only the parent product. The variation SKU lives on a child item the search does not look at.

Can staff search by SKU in the admin?

The admin product list has its own search. This guide is about the shopper facing search on your store.
